I love the energy at this anti-Prop. 8 protest in San Diego. This bad law is SO getting tossed. You can’t write discrimination into the state constitution without a supermajority and for a damn good reason. A bunch of filthy out-of-state money and lying TV spots don’t get these bigots a win. California is better than that. The Mormons and religious right ain’t seen nuthin’ yet. We will overturn this prop, and the rest of the states will fall like dominoes.

I sure hope you are right. There were even protests here in Mississippi (as hard as that may be for those of you living in the civilized world to believe)!

Quite stonishing actually. Several years ago, before Canada rescinded discrimination against homosexual marriages, the US papers were full of attacks against us eskimos up here, destroying the roots of western civilization - and look now: demos against outlawing homosexual marriages in the US.
Wonders never cease, and humanistic ideas acyually can take hold.

It’s sad that proposition 8 passed in California but it can always be rescinded! As one Los Angeles Times article pointed out a few months ago, once all the old people die the gay people will be free to do whatever they like… so it’s just a matter of time.

Just like slavery. Just like Womens’ Suffrage. Just like the Civil Rights in the 1960s. It’s the shifting zeitgeist at work!

I’m a Californian (actually San Diego ;), born and raised, by the way.

Perhaps we won’t personally overturn prop 8 but rather have it serve as just the test case needed to send it up to the supreme court (hopefully with a few Obama appointees on the bench). The argument isn’t that difficult.

I have right X.
Q is a different gender.
Therefore, Q does not have right X.
The 14th amendment says that everybody gets the same rights.
Q constitutionally has right X.

It is not constitutional to deny a person rights held by other citizens because of their gender. While I can marry women, it is not acceptable to say that women cannot marry women because they are women.

In principle this is the same argument used to overturn interracial marriage in Loving v. Virginia.
