Russia Proposes Ban on Reporting Offender’s Religion

The authors of the bill suggest imposing “a ban on the distribution of information about the ethnicity, race and religion of people who suffered from crimes, offenders and suspected criminals through the mass media and computer networks.”

This makes sense for someone’s race–it’s irrelevant to the crime. But since many religions consider “god’s” law to overrule human law, knowledge of a person’s religion is most definitely relevant and newsworthy. Journalistic standards should be enforced through professional style and practices, not legal mandate.
