Death to NIMBYism

It’s happening again. Environmentalists are opposing a renewable energy project. CNN chose to report the story this way: "Massive Wind Farm May Endanger Birds" What are they smoking? Let’s review: Global warming, dependence on middle-eastern oil, air pollution. These are the real enemies. Yet still, when anyone takes steps to change the status quo, like building wind farms–even offshore–you can count on your local environmental group to cry foul.

Some environmentalists said the spinning blades could kill countless rare birds that migrate through the area each year on their way to and from winter grounds in Mexico and Central America.

"You probably couldn’t pick a worse location," said Walter Kittelberger, chairman of the Lower Laguna Madre Foundation, an environmental group named for the strip of water between the mainland and Padre Island.

Fortunately, the Sierra Club is supporting the wind project. But other groups, formed with a narrow scope to protect local interests, have got to stop being so small minded and look at the big picture. There is no environmental security without energy security. And there is no energy security without a transition to renewables.

We are going to need massive numbers of massive wind farms to replace the massive amount of energy we now get from massive coal power plants all over the U.S.

Next time environmentalists decide to oppose wind power, in any location for any reason, they should think about what they are supporting: continued and increased use of coal.

I think the state should get the hell out of energy production, but personally, as a consumer, I would favour a mix of hydro and nuclear (for the big scale), solar and wind productions (for the smaller scale).

Theoretically, there are ways to extract energy from even the rotation of the Earth. In the long term, the very concept of energy problems is ridiculous. But of course, in the long term we are all dead.

I am opposed to wind farmes, coal plants, hydroelectric plants, nuclear plants … and also solar power, for good measure.

I am in favor of NIMBY. Preferably all communities would win their NIMBY battles and these power plants and refineries would not exist anywhere. Instead, these lands would have remained in their pristine, natural state rather than suffer the indignity of vandalism by human development.

The sooner that humankind is deprived of energy and natural resources, the better. I’d love to see the day in which capitalistic consumerism collapses. When the Interstate highways and malls empty I will celebrate.

Humans have already destroyed enough of the world. The time has come for Nature to deprive humankind of this power.

David,

“I am opposed to wind farmes, coal plants, hydroelectric plants, nuclear plants … and also solar power, for good measure.”

Thanks for showing your true colors once more. When faced with a choice between clean renewables and burning more coal, opposing all power plants will ensure more coal will be burned. But that’s what you want, isn’t it?

Burning more coal can only lead ultimately to more global warming and destruction, which gets us closer to your stated goal of human extinction. (See below links for examples.)

As I’ve said before, you fit the definition of a misanthrope. You hate human civilization as radically as the fundamentalist Islamics. Both you and they would like to drag the world back to the dark ages or beyond. You differ from Al-Qaeda only in the fact that you don’t use violence (yet) to achieve your ends. You are one scary mo-fo.

From the Wikipedia article on ‘misanthrope:’

Misanthropy is a general dislike of the human race from the viewpoint of another human individual. It is derived from Greek, a combination of the prefix ‘mis-‘ (meaning “bad, wrong,”) and anthropos (meaning “man, human being”), thus referencing defective mankind.

It is not dislike of individual human beings, but rather dislike of the features shared by all humanity throughout place and time, including oneself. A misanthrope is thus a person who exhibits a general dislike of its own human kind and opposes any kind of prevalence of the human race, regardless whether through descendants and/or other specious features. Such a person consistently sees throughout history, a futile evolution in mankind and therefore no meaningful future development of the human race per se.

David, recognize anything familiar? But it’s a great lesson to see the shadow that lurks beneath your pseudo-religious, ‘love and light’, ‘love the animals’ patina. I’m going to ask you one more time, David, to stop posting these hateful, anti-humanity diatribes here. If you can’t manage to stay away, I will be deleting your comments in the future.

I treated you with reason and respect for a while, but you have now become a troll. Sorry, dude, you are literally beyond hope. Good-bye.

Don’t worry Davey, in all your negativity you’ll be long dead before we find our umpteenth source of energy and continue puttering along us horrible humans us!!! :o

blagh… such negativity and stupidity.

If you are so sickened by our “progress” come invade my house and I’ll show you nature in effect by some natural selection. I’ll gladly protect my “domain” and rip you limb from limb if necessary. I’ve already discarded one human for the protection of my “domain”.

…but in the end, I’d rather not stoop to the levels of nature and natural selection. I kinda like building great things and progressing along with all the world.

But I suppose you don’t like that.

:) smile while the world doesn’t end like you want it. I’ll laugh at you while I burn some petro this weekend at the races! :()
