Central to the growing discipline of industrial ecology is the idea that one business’s waste can become another’s “food”—and that increasing the cycling of materials, water, and energy puts businesses on the path to sustainable development. But industrial ecology suffers from a lack of hard data on the advantages of the mutually beneficial exchanges that have become known as industrial symbiosis.
