Edwards: Americans Should Give Up Their SUVs!

Edwards: Americans Should Give Up Their SUVs!

Taking a stand for common sense and the environment, John Edwards has bravely asked Americans to prepare themselves for driving more fuel efficient vehicles.

Bravo! Hip, Hip, Hooray! Yes, Yes, Yes!

I’ve been on the warpath about this for over five years. (Previous Post) Until Americans are ready to step up to the plate and shoulder the full costs and environmental externalities of their vehicles, government will have to provide the leadership. Part of that comes from the bully pulpit. The rest will have to come in the form of courageous regulations that change “business as usual” in our energy and auto industries. It’s about damn time someone had the courage to stand up and say what we all already know, if we are honest with ourselves about it!

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards told a labor group he would ask Americans to make a big sacrifice: their sport utility vehicles.

The former North Carolina senator told a forum by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, yesterday he thinks Americans are willing to sacrifice.

Edwards says Americans should be asked to drive more fuel efficient vehicles. He says he would ask them to give up SUVs.

I don’t want to hear from any so-called conservatives or libertarians about this. There’s nothing conservative or free-market about making decisions that cause direct harm to, or impose costs on others. If you want to be free to drive wasteful and polluting vehicles, then pay the rest of us for the damage you are causing. Capiche?

My news read aggregator truncated the headline to:

“Edwards: America Should Give Up Thei…”

Imagine what I thought the article said?

Now that I got over my shock from the headline and actually read the article, Does Edwards also want America to give up their pick-up trucks? After all, they are built on the same chassis as the SUVs, and get the same gas mileage. And those trucks are far more ubiquitous than SUVs. Does he think all those Bible-belters would be willing to do that?

I don’t think there’s a redneck or pseudo-redneck in the country willing to do that.

I think it would be better to focuson fuel efficiency rather than vehicle type, since the correlation between vehicle type and fuel efficiency is not perfect, though right now it is good. Apart from that, I agree with all this.

John P. LOL That’s funny.

No, I don’t think the rednecks will give up their pickup trucks. Nor should the construction, rescue workers and other people who really need them.

But the fact that Edwards has brought it up means people are at least thinking about it seriously and policy usually follows.

I’m not for an outright ban on certain vehicle types. More for carbon taxes and/or feebates based on vehicle efficiency. (Less efficient vehicles pay a fee, more efficient vehicles get a rebate.)

SUV is just the buzzword for the most visible dimension of the problem. But many cars and trucks are just as bad.

With the world oil situation being what it is, this problem may take care of itself–which would be painful. Reports say that the U.S. gasoline stockpiles are at their lowest levels in recent history. We only have about 20 days supply, a razor-thin margin by any stretch.
