ABC News: Erasing the Pain of the Past

"The idea is that memories are vulnerable. They can be improved or weakened. The main point is that we're trying to understand how this all works rather than come up with a drug."

This experimental drug to weaken memories predictably has people up in arms about altering consciousness. But aren't those “ethicists” tacitly acknowledging that we are our brains, and there is no mind/body split? This type of question is the barest tip of the iceberg. Once the brain is understood for what it is, it will be subject to all sorts of modification. The only mods to be feared are the ones individuals do not want: such as government or religious meddling. Let people decide for themselves!
