Show Us The Evidence, Karen!

Posted at salon.com in response to this article:

It’s time this silly canard be retired. Refusing to believe in ‘god’ (which one?) is not ‘hating’ religion, any more than refusing to ‘believe’ in Peter Pan is hating movies. It’s the very real, concrete and scary actions of believers that cause all the trouble everyone (including Richard Dawkins) is upset about.

Fence-sitters and intellectuals alike: Why are you so credulous? Why coddle such an outdated institution as belief? Belief is the real pathology. Why not demand evidence and reject all else? Create your own meaning in your life if you need it. Or just spend your days figuring out how to get along better in this world.

What’s so special about mysteries anyway, except the pleasure of trying to solve them? Armstrong’s pseudo-sophistication about her concept of ‘god’ is a shallow mask for her worthless fear and sentimentality. In the end, it’s all just a defense mechanism.

Religion already has enough apologists. Will the human race please grow up already?

I’m holding my breath (not). We can dream.

The letters thread over there is unbelievable. It’s like some of the people are just making/hearing the tired old arguments for the first time.

One particularly priceless snippet was the tried and true “wouldn’t you rather have a christian for a neighbor than an atheist?”

Talk about legitimized hate speech. I think if some of these people had their way, we atheists would all be in leper colonies somewhere. Actually…that’s not a bad idea! Didn’t Australia start as a prison colony? We could just leave the believers to their follies. Damn, there aren’t any more unoccupied land masses…

The lamenting wails echoing from the mouths of the faithful will only grow louder as their adherents continue to diminsh in number.

The lamentations are even louder in Europe.

Waaa! Everyone hates God because they don’t believe in my version of Him anymore! Everyone is headed to moral ruin for not believing in this particular superstition! The sky is falling! Waaaa!
