Sri Chinmoy: Good Riddance to the Creep

October 13, 2007 — THE gullible bunch at the Daily News appears to have chugged down the Kool-Aid, then licked the bottom of the cup handed them by devotees of Sri Chinmoy, the creepy Queens “guru” who went to the big ashram in the sky Thursday. In a fawning feature about his death at age 76 – complete with a teary-eyed tribute from Queens Councilman James Gennaro – the Snooze lauded Chinmoy as a promoter of “world harmony” and a “prolific author, poet and musician.” With a quick Internet search, the paper would have discovered Chimnoy’s sleazier side – which includes claims from former devotees that he ran a “cult,” caused “disturbing personality changes” in members and ordered his dreamy-eyed female followers to engage in exploitive sexcapades.

Go read the whole thing. This corrupt nutball, con-man, and pseudo-spiritual circus performer apparently received faxed condolences from both Al Gore and Mikhail Gorbachev, the New York Times reports. Even great peacemakers can still be gullible, I guess.

Not a single word either from the NYT or Daily News about Chinmoy’s ugly abuses and frauds. Shame. What is it that makes good people so afraid to confront the truth about religious charlatans? Is it just so common now that we expect our religious leaders to be buggering their followers and mounting scorched-earth campaigns against followers who leave? So it’s unremarkable, no longer worthy of mention? Apparently so for the New York Times and Daily News.

Their fawning tributes get the over-the-top journalistic cynicism award for 2007.
