Stampede During Hajj Ritual Kills 345

Thousands of Muslim pilgrims rushing to complete a symbolic stoning ritual during the hajj tripped over luggage Thursday, causing a crush in which at least 345 people were killed despite Saudi attempts to prevent stampedes that have plagued the annual event.

The stampede occurred as tens of thousands of pilgrims headed toward al-Jamarat, a series of three pillars representing the devil that the faithful pelt with stones to purge themselves of sin. Full story.

Yes, it’s true. These things also happen at soccer matches, and for other secular reasons on occasion. But the simple fact is: if these pilgrims were not believers, they would be alive now.

This seems to happen every year. In 1990 is was particularly bad with over 1400 trampled to death I think.

Allahu Akbar!

Personal gain… unbelievable what we do to get it… Whether it be a shiny afterlife or a free DVD-player.
I’ve seen people in agony here in Amsterdam because they so badly wanted: – a concert ticket – an Xbox360 – the free DVD-player promised to the 20 customers who would come in first in the morning.
Okay these 345 people supposedly were “believers” but they wanted something for themselves and they had to hurry to get it.
(And then fell over other people’s luggage as the story goes).
