‘Blasphemy Laws’ – They still don’t get it

The blasphemy laws of this country do not include Hinduism which is the third largest religion in the world, with over one billion practitioners. All attacks on our temples have been either ignored or very lightly dealt with. We understand that this law is not enforceable against the human rights laws but our point is that Hindus do not have adequate protection under any legal instrument for the safety of their temples.

The notion of a “blasphemy law” contravenes the right to free speech. Such laws are therefore incompatible with democracy and basic human rights. “Protection of temples” is handled under property crimes statutes. Any attack on a temple is vandalism and should be dealt with no differently than any other form of vandalism.

I’ve never even heard of a blasphemy law. Is this some sort of joke?

Not in some parts of the world, I’m afraid.
